Category: Console Servers

Description: Manages serial console port connectivity and session status on Opengear out-of-band management appliances.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is OPENGEAR-CONNECT-MIB?

This MIB module is specific to Opengear, a vendor of serial console servers and out-of-band management appliances, and it governs visibility into serial console port connectivity and session activity. It exposes an event table capturing connection-related activity such as which user connected, the type of connection event, and which physical serial port and port label were involved. Administrators use it primarily to monitor operational/software status of the console server itself, tracking session establishment, disconnects, and user activity on specific console ports rather than deep hardware sensors. It includes its own notification objects (ogConnectMibNotifications) so events like unauthorized or unexpected connection attempts can trigger SNMP traps, and it operates alongside other Opengear enterprise MIBs for the same appliance family. It is typically deployed in data centers and remote sites where Opengear console servers provide out-of-band serial access to routers, switches, and servers for lights-out management, where OPENGEAR-CONNECT-MIB SNMP monitoring gives operators visibility into who is accessing serial consoles and when.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OPENGEAR-CONNECT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Opengear console server / out-of-band management appliance

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ogconnEventTable, indexed by ogconnEventIndex, to see recent entries showing ogconnEventUsername, ogconnEventType, and the associated ogconnEventPortNumber or ogconnEventPortLabel. A spike of connection events on a specific labeled port outside of a maintenance window, or an unexpected username in ogconnEventUsername, would reveal unauthorized console access. SNMP traps from ogConnectMibNotifications can alert an operator in real time when a new console session begins on a critical port, giving visibility into who is accessing serial consoles and when.

What Can Be Monitored

  • serial console session events
  • connecting username
  • connection event type
  • console port number/label
  • console access notifications
