Category: Out-of-Band Management
Description: Manages automatic failover configuration, trigger conditions, and status on Opengear out-of-band appliances.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is OG-FAILOVER-MIB?
This is a vendor-specific MIB from Opengear covering the automatic network failover feature on its out-of-band console server/management appliances, which switches a device's uplink from a primary to a secondary network path when connectivity is lost. It exposes an event table recording failover events, including which primary and secondary interfaces were involved, plus notification objects for alerting when a failover occurs. Its monitoring role is directly about device resiliency status: administrators track failover events to know when the appliance's network connectivity switched paths, which is essential for confirming out-of-band management access remains available during an outage and for spotting a flapping or unreliable primary link. As an Opengear-specific MIB it does not appear to build on a particular IETF standard beyond general SNMP notification conventions. It is deployed on Opengear out-of-band management/console server appliances at remote sites or data centers where network resiliency for remote access is critical, monitored through the OG-FAILOVER-MIB MIB.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OG-FAILOVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Opengear out-of-band console server/management appliance
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls ogfovrEventTable, indexed by ogfovrEventIndex, to see recent failover events and inspect ogfovrEventPrimary and ogfovrEventSecondary to identify which network paths were involved in a given switchover. A rising count of entries in this table over a short period would indicate the primary uplink is flapping and repeatedly triggering failover to the secondary path. The module also defines ogfovrMibNotifications so that a failover event can trigger an SNMP trap to alert operators in near real time rather than requiring polling.
What Can Be Monitored
- failover event history
- primary interface involved in failover
- secondary interface involved in failover
- failover trap notifications
