What Is OG-HOST-MIB?

This is a vendor-specific MIB from Opengear covering host connection monitoring on its out-of-band console server/management appliances, tracking reachability probes (such as ping) against configured remote hosts. It exposes an event table recording host-monitoring events, including the username that triggered or is associated with the event, event type, target address, protocol, and port, along with a description field. Its monitoring role is centered on external device/service reachability status: administrators use it to confirm whether monitored hosts are responding on expected protocols/ports, which is useful for detecting when a managed device behind the Opengear appliance has gone unreachable. As an Opengear-specific MIB it relies on general SNMP notification conventions rather than a particular IETF standard, and it complements the appliance's own host-monitoring configuration. It is deployed on Opengear out-of-band management appliances, where OG-HOST-MIB SNMP monitoring keeps tabs on the reachability of other devices at a remote site.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OG-HOST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • host reachability event history
  • monitored host address/protocol/port
  • event type (up/down)
  • event description

Supported Devices

  • Opengear out-of-band console server/management appliance

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls oghostEventTable, indexed by oghostEventIndex, to review recent host-monitoring events, checking oghostEventAddress, oghostEventProtocol, and oghostEventPort to identify which target and service were being probed. The oghostEventType and oghostEventDescription fields indicate whether the event represents a host going down, coming back up, or another monitored condition, while oghostEventUsername records who configured the check. Repeated 'host down' type events for the same oghostEventAddress would signal a persistent reachability problem with that remote device.
