Category: Novell

Description: Manages Novell NetWare Link Services Protocol (NLSP) routing adjacencies, LSP databases, and path metrics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NOVELL-NLSP-MIB?

NOVELL-NLSP-MIB is a vendor MIB from Novell defining managed objects for NetWare Link Services Protocol (NLSP), a link-state routing protocol used in legacy Novell NetWare/IPX networks analogous to OSI IS-IS. It exposes configuration and state data at the routing system, adjacency, and circuit levels, including per-system operational state, system ID, and link-state PDU (LSP) timing parameters such as generation and transmission intervals. Monitoring here is almost entirely software/protocol status rather than physical hardware: an operator checks nlspSysState to confirm the NLSP process is up and correctly participating in the routing domain, and inspects the LSP timer objects (nlspSysMinLSPGenInt, nlspSysMaxLSPAge, etc.) to diagnose routing instability or excessive LSP flooding. It depends conceptually on the underlying IPX/NLSP protocol stack rather than another SNMP MIB, since it models a proprietary Novell routing protocol rather than an IETF standard. It would be deployed on legacy Novell NetWare routers or multiprotocol routers (e.g., older Cisco/3Com gear) that still ran IPX/NLSP routing, a technology now largely retired. Engineers can download the NOVELL-NLSP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NOVELL-NLSP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Novell NetWare routers/servers
  • legacy multiprotocol routers running IPX/NLSP (e.g., older Cisco or 3Com routers)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll nlspSysTable/nlspSysEntry for nlspSysState and nlspSysID to confirm a router's NLSP instance is operational and correctly identified within the routing domain, and inspect nlspSysMinNonBcastLSPTransInt and nlspSysBcastHelloInt/nlspSysNonBcastHelloInt to verify hello and LSP timers match neighboring routers. A mismatched or stuck nlspSysState would reveal an NLSP adjacency that failed to form, explaining IPX routing black holes between segments.

What Can Be Monitored

  • NLSP system operational state
  • system ID
  • LSP generation interval timers
  • hello interval timers (broadcast/non-broadcast)
  • maximum LSP age
  • routing adjacency/circuit status
