Category: Novell

Description: Defines SNMP traps for Novell Directory Services (NDS/eDirectory) replication failures and partition events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Novell-Directory-Services-Trap-MIB?

This MIB defines SNMP trap objects for Novell Directory Services (NDS), later rebranded eDirectory, the hierarchical directory service underlying NetWare and later cross-platform Novell environments. It exposes trap-payload variables carrying event metadata -- timestamp, event type, result code, the initiating entry ('perpetrator'), affected entry name/ID, class name, attribute name, and syntax -- rather than a polled MIB tree of counters. Its monitoring value is entirely fault/event-based: it lets a management station receive and interpret NDS replication failures, partition operation events, and directory synchronization errors as they occur, effectively acting as the software-health alerting channel for the directory service. It depends on the underlying NDS/eDirectory replication and partitioning architecture for the semantics of its event types and result codes. It is deployed on Novell NetWare or eDirectory servers wherever directory replication is used across a multi-server NDS tree. Engineers can download the Novell-Directory-Services-Trap-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Novell-Directory-Services-Trap-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Novell NetWare server
  • Novell eDirectory server

Monitoring Examples

An NMS receiving an ndsTrap-MIB notification would inspect ndsEventType and ndsResult to determine whether a replication or partition operation failed, then use ndsEntryName and ndsPerpetratorName to identify which directory object and initiating server triggered the event. ndsTrapTime gives the timestamp for correlating the event with other server logs. A burst of traps reporting non-zero ndsResult codes for the same ndsClassName indicates a systemic replication problem affecting that object class across the NDS tree.

What Can Be Monitored

  • NDS replication failure events
  • partition operation results
  • affected directory entry/class
  • event timestamp and initiating entry
