Description: Manages Nortel Magellan Passport alarm log, severity levels, and notification reporting configuration.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Nortel-Magellan-Passport-AlarmMIB?
Nortel-Magellan-Passport-AlarmMIB manages the alarm/fault reporting subsystem of the Nortel Magellan Passport, a legacy Nortel wide-area packet/frame-relay switching platform, defining the alarm log, severity levels, and notification configuration for the device. It exposes per-alarm data such as the originating component's row pointer and name, event time, active-list status, severity, alarm type, probable cause, an NTP (network time) index, free-text comment data, a notification ID, and a hierarchical-clear flag, plus a defined alarm trap and mandatory alarm information object. This module is entirely dedicated to software/hardware fault-status monitoring: it is how an operator sees that a specific component on the Passport switch has raised an alarm, what its severity and probable cause are, and when it occurred, functioning much like a fault/event log for the whole chassis. It relies on Nortel's broader Magellan Passport MIB component-naming conventions (componentName/componentRowPointer) shared across the other Passport MIBs in this family (e.g., the APPN and Bridge MIBs), since alarms reference components defined there. It is deployed on Nortel Magellan Passport WAN switches in carrier or large-enterprise packet-switched networks. Engineers can download the Nortel-Magellan-Passport-AlarmMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-Magellan-Passport-AlarmMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Nortel Magellan Passport WAN/packet switches
Monitoring Examples
An operator would monitor alarmTrap notifications and walk the alarm table filtering on severity to find any component with a critical or major alarmType, then use componentName/componentRowPointer and probableCause to identify exactly which module or link is faulted and eventTime to see when it started. An alarm entry with lpForHierClear not yet set alongside a high severity value would reveal an unresolved fault still requiring operator acknowledgment or downstream clearing.
What Can Be Monitored
- active alarm list and severity
- alarm type and probable cause
- alarm event time
- affected component name
- notification/alarm ID
- hierarchical alarm clear status
