Description: Configures general system settings including hostname, admin password policy, and device parameters on NetScreen firewalls.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NETSCREEN-SET-GEN-MIB?

NETSCREEN-SET-GEN-MIB is a Juniper NetScreen (ScreenOS) private enterprise MIB covering general, chassis-wide system configuration on NetScreen firewall/security appliances. It exposes configuration-oriented objects for the device's identity and baseline settings, including system IP address, hostname, domain name, operating mode, software version, and licensing information, rather than continuous performance counters. For monitoring software status, it is chiefly useful for confirming the installed ScreenOS software version (nsSetGenSwVer), license entitlement (nsSetGenLicInfo), and operating mode (nsSetGenOpMode), letting an administrator verify a device is running the expected firmware and license tier and hasn't silently reverted to a different mode after a reboot. It has no notable dependency on external standard MIBs, being a self-contained NetScreen private-enterprise extension. It is typically used for centralized configuration auditing and inventory of NetScreen ScreenOS firewalls across an enterprise or managed-security estate. Engineers can download the NETSCREEN-SET-GEN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETSCREEN-SET-GEN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper NetScreen firewall
  • NetScreen ScreenOS security appliance

Monitoring Examples

Polling nsSetGenSysIp and nsSetGenHostName lets a management station confirm a device's assigned management address and name match inventory records, while nsSetGenSwVer and nsSetGenLicInfo reveal the running firmware build and whether advanced features are licensed. A mismatch between the expected and reported nsSetGenOpMode (e.g., transparent vs. route mode) after maintenance would flag configuration drift needing correction. Some objects such as nsSetGenSysIp are marked obsolete in the module, so current tooling should prefer their replacements where defined.

What Can Be Monitored

  • system hostname and domain
  • operating mode (route/NAT/transparent)
  • ScreenOS software version
  • license information
  • system log/self-traffic drop setting
