Description: Monitors wireless client session attributes including authentication state, roaming history, and data rates on Nortel NTWS.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB?

NTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB is a Nortel NTWS wireless LAN MIB that monitors individual wireless client sessions on an NTWS Access Controller, tracking each associated client's identity, authentication, and network attachment details. Its central ntwsClSessClientSessionTable exposes per-session data including client MAC address, session ID, username, IP address, encryption type, VLAN, the serving AP's serial number and radio number, access type, and authentication method. This is primarily software/session-state monitoring of the wireless network layer: an administrator uses it to see how many clients are connected, verify they authenticated with the expected method and encryption, and troubleshoot roaming or connectivity issues by correlating a client's session to a specific AP and radio. It is closely tied to the other NTWS MIBs in the same family, particularly NTWS-AP-STATUS-MIB (to know which AP a session refers to) and NTWS-TRAP-MIB (which raises notifications on session state changes). It is deployed on Nortel NTWS wireless controllers in enterprise WLAN environments with many roaming client devices. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the NTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel NTWS wireless LAN controllers (Access Controllers)
  • wireless client devices associated to Nortel NTWS access points

Monitoring Examples

An operator would query ntwsClSessClientSessionTable for a given ntwsClSessClientSessMacAddress to see its ntwsClSessClientSessIpAddress, ntwsClSessClientSessEncryptionType, and ntwsClSessClientSessApSerialNum/ntwsClSessClientSessRadioNum, confirming the client associated to the expected AP with strong encryption. Repeated changes in ntwsClSessClientSessApSerialNum for the same MAC address within a short window would reveal excessive roaming or a client stuck ping-ponging between access points.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active client sessions
  • client MAC address and IP address
  • encryption type in use
  • authentication method
  • serving AP and radio number
  • client VLAN assignment
