Description: MOBILE-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MOBILE-MIB?

MOBILE-MIB corresponds to the IETF standards-track MIB defined in RFC 2006 for managing IP Mobility Support (Mobile IPv4), covering the operation of home agents and foreign agents that let a mobile node maintain a permanent IP address while roaming across networks. It exposes objects describing mobility agent advertisements, mobile node registration tables, and counters for registration requests/replies and errors. It is used to monitor the software-level status of mobility agents, including registration success/failure counts and active mobile node binding entries, revealing whether roaming devices are successfully registering with their home or foreign agent. It is a standalone IETF standards MIB that complements (but doesn't depend on) IP-MIB and works alongside standard IP routing MIBs on mobility-enabled routers. It is typically deployed on routers or gateways acting as Mobile IP home agents/foreign agents, historically used in early mobile/roaming IP deployments and some cellular/military networking contexts. Engineers can download the MOBILE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MOBILE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 2006 Mobile IP)
  • Mobile IP-capable routers/gateways (home agent/foreign agent)

Monitoring Examples

No specific object or table names were available in the source excerpt for this MIB, but consistent with RFC 2006's Mobile IP MIB, a network operator would poll a home or foreign agent's mobility binding table and registration counters to confirm mobile nodes are successfully registering, using a spike in registration errors as the signal of an authentication or connectivity problem for roaming devices.

What Can Be Monitored

  • mobile node registration count
  • registration request/reply/error counters
  • active mobility binding table entries
  • agent advertisement status
