Description: Nokia Siemens Networks SHE DSLAM Metallic Line Testing (MELT) control commands and measurement results for copper loop diagnostics per ITU-T G.996.2

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SHE-MELT-MIB?

SHE-MELT-MIB is a Nokia Siemens Networks proprietary module for the SHE DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) platform, targeting copper-access broadband infrastructure. It exposes control commands and result objects for Metallic Line Testing (MELT), the copper-loop diagnostic scheme defined in ITU-T G.996.2, so it is squarely a fault/diagnostics-oriented MIB rather than a general interface or performance module. In monitoring terms it is used to trigger and read back per-line electrical tests (loop resistance, capacitance, insulation, and foreign-voltage checks) that reveal degraded or faulty copper pairs before they cause a full subscriber outage, effectively serving as a hardware/wiring health check for DSL lines. It builds on ITU-T G.996.2 test definitions and is meant to be used alongside the vendor's broader SHE DSLAM MIB set rather than standalone. It is deployed by telecom operators running SHE DSLAM chassis in the access network, typically invoked on demand from an NMS or CLI when a subscriber reports line trouble, with technicians occasionally opening a SHE-MELT-MIB MIB Browser session to confirm the test control and result objects available.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SHE-MELT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia Siemens Networks SHE DSLAM

Monitoring Examples

An operator troubleshooting a customer complaint would set a MELT control object to initiate a metallic line test against a specific DSLAM port and then poll the corresponding result object for measured loop resistance or capacitance values. Because sample object names were not available in the source, a realistic naming pattern would follow sheMeltTestTable/sheMeltTestEntry with per-port index and result fields (e.g. resistance, capacitance, fault type). An abnormal reading (e.g. very low insulation resistance) would indicate water ingress or a damaged copper pair long before DSL sync loss becomes visible. This lets field technicians be dispatched with a specific fault type already diagnosed remotely.

What Can Be Monitored

  • metallic line test status
  • loop resistance/capacitance readings
  • insulation fault detection
  • test trigger/result per DSLAM port
  • copper pair diagnostic history
