Category: Network Management

Description: Monitors fault management status on LANBuilder network hub systems.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is LBHUB-FMS-MIB?

LBHUB-FMS-MIB is a 3Com proprietary SNMP module (under the a3Com enterprise branch, part of the LANBuilder hub product family) providing fault management status for LANBuilder network hub systems, and is marked experimental in its source. It exposes hardware self-test and battery status, power-on self-test (POST) results, and a fault log table recording individual fault events with error numbers, timestamps, and restart counts. Its primary purpose is monitoring hardware status of the hub chassis: battery health, POST outcome, management-bus communication errors (overrun/framing errors), and a history of faults with restart counts that reveal recurring hardware instability. As a legacy 3Com enterprise MIB it predates common standards like ENTITY-MIB and does not appear to depend on other MIBs. It would typically have been deployed in legacy enterprise wiring-closet hub installations for hardware health monitoring before the shift to switched Ethernet. Engineers can download the LBHUB-FMS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LBHUB-FMS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • 3Com LANBuilder network hub

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll vmMonFaultTable/vmMonFaultEntry (indexed by vmMonFaultIndex) to review vmMonFaultErrorNumber, vmMonFaultTimeStamp, and vmMonFaultRestartCount, identifying a hub that has faulted and restarted repeatedly. vmMonBatteryStatus and vmMonPOSTResults would be checked after a power event to confirm the hub passed its self-test and its backup battery is healthy. Rising vmMonMgmtBusOverrunError or vmMonMgmtBusFramingError counts would point to a failing management bus or backplane connection. vmMonFaultModifiedFlag indicates whether new fault entries have been logged since the last poll.

What Can Be Monitored

  • fault log entries with timestamps
  • restart count
  • battery status
  • POST self-test results
  • management bus error counts
