Category: Vendor: Juniper

Description: MIB from Juniper Networks for managing routing policy filters along with their match conditions and actions on E-series routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Juniper-POLICY-MIB?

Juniper-POLICY-MIB manages routing/traffic policy filters, match conditions, and actions on Juniper E-series routers, including classifier control lists and rate-limit control lists used for QoS and route filtering. It exposes a policy table with administrative and operational state, error codes, reference counts, and rule indexing used to build and apply named policies. Its monitoring value is software/configuration-state oriented: juniPolicyOperStatus and juniPolicyErrorValue reveal whether a policy is actually active and functioning as configured, while juniPolicyReferenceCount shows how widely a policy is applied, which matters when diagnosing unexpected traffic filtering or rate-limiting behavior. It is a self-contained Juniper enterprise MIB that other Juniper subscriber and interface MIBs reference by policy name/ID. It is used on Juniper E-series routers applying routing policies, classifiers, or rate limits to subscriber or core traffic. Engineers can download the Juniper-POLICY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Juniper-POLICY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper E-series router

Monitoring Examples

An operator checks juniPolicyTable/juniPolicyEntry for a given juniPolicyId to compare juniPolicyAdminState against juniPolicyOperStatus, and inspects juniPolicyErrorValue when a policy fails to activate as expected. A high juniPolicyReferenceCount indicates the policy is heavily reused across interfaces or subscribers, so an error there would have broad impact. Reviewing juniClassifierControlList and juniRateLimitControlList alongside juniPolicyAtmCellModeEnable helps confirm whether traffic classification and rate limiting are behaving as intended on ATM-based interfaces.

What Can Be Monitored

  • policy admin/operational state
  • policy activation error codes
  • policy reference/usage count
  • classifier control list assignment
  • rate-limit control list assignment

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using juniPolicyReferenceCount OID:

Select a Juniper E-series router (routing/traffic policy filters, QoS classifiers) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type juniPolicyReferenceCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Reflects the number of times this policy has been applied within the chassis. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
