What Is Job-Monitoring-MIB?

Job-Monitoring-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB (RFC 2564) for monitoring the status and progress of print and other jobs on servers, printers, and similar devices. It exposes job-set summary data (number of active jobs, oldest/newest active job indices), job identification/submission tracking, and per-job persistence and accounting attributes. Its central monitoring purpose is software/service-level status tracking rather than hardware sensors: it lets an administrator see how many jobs are active, queued, or completed on a device, and whether job persistence settings retain historical job data for accounting or troubleshooting, revealing stalled queues or job backlogs. It is designed to complement the IETF Printer MIB and Finisher MIB, sharing job-related indexing concepts with those standards. It is typically deployed on network printers, print servers, and multifunction devices where administrators need to track job queue depth and job completion status across a fleet. Engineers can download the Job-Monitoring-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll jmGeneralTable/jmGeneralEntry to read jmGeneralNumberOfActiveJobs, jmGeneralOldestActiveJobIndex, and jmGeneralNewestActiveJobIndex per job set, revealing whether jobs are piling up faster than they are completing on a given device. The jmJobIDTable/jmJobIDEntry with jmJobSubmissionID lets an operator trace a specific submitted job back to its originating request for troubleshooting a stuck print job. A steadily climbing jmGeneralNumberOfActiveJobs with no corresponding completions is a clear indicator of a jammed printer or a stalled print spooler needing intervention.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using jmGeneralNumberOfActiveJobs OID:

Select a device implementing Job-Monitoring-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type jmGeneralNumberOfActiveJobs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The current number of 'active' jobs in the jmJobIDTable, jmJobTable, and jmAttributeTable, i.e., the total number of jobs that are in the pending, processing, or processingStopped states. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the count changes from its expected baseline, since that would indicate the underlying set of items changed unexpectedly. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
