Organization: Juniper Networks, Inc.
Last Updated: 2012-09-04
Category: Alarm and Event Management, Domain: Fault Management, Vendor: Juniper
Description: Provides extended alarm notification and management objects for Juniper Networks devices, supplementing the base alarm MIB.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is JUNIPER-ALARM-EXT-MIB?
JUNIPER-ALARM-EXT-MIB is a Juniper Networks enterprise MIB that extends the standard IETF ALARM-MIB with router-chassis-specific timing detail for cleared alarms. Its single table, jnxAlarmClearTable, uses AUGMENTS against alarmClearEntry from ALARM-MIB to add one object, jnxAlarmClearActiveDateAndTime, recording the DateAndTime at which a now-cleared chassis alarm was originally raised. Because ALARM-MIB's clear table otherwise records only that an alarm was cleared without preserving when it was first raised, this extension gives operators the ability to reconstruct alarm duration and correlate raise/clear timing for post-incident analysis. It depends entirely on ALARM-MIB and JUNIPER-SMI for its object tree and row indexing, and is deployed on Juniper routers alongside the broader Juniper chassis and alarm MIB family. Network teams working with Juniper chassis alarms often keep a JUNIPER-ALARM-EXT-MIB download on hand when building historical alarm-duration reports.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JUNIPER-ALARM-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Juniper Networks routers (chassis alarm subsystem across the JUNOS router line)
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls jnxAlarmClearTable's jnxAlarmClearActiveDateAndTime for a recently cleared chassis alarm and compares it to the time the alarm actually cleared to compute how long the condition (e.g., a power or temperature alarm) was active; an unexpectedly long duration would point to a chassis issue that went unnoticed for an extended period.
What Can Be Monitored
- cleared chassis alarm raise timestamps
- alarm duration reconstruction via alarmClearTable augmentation
- chassis alarm history correlation
