What Is JNX-OPT-IF-EXT-MIB?

JNX-OPT-IF-EXT-MIB is a Juniper Networks enterprise MIB extending optical interface management for DWDM/OTN transport equipment, built as an enterprise extension to the 'Black Link' concept from ITU-T G.698.2 and related optical-transport drafts. It exposes configuration and monitoring objects for optical parameters at both the optical multiplex-section (OPSm) and optical-channel (OCh) layers, including directionality, fiber-type recommendations, channel spacing, bit-rate line coding, forward error correction (FEC) settings, and bit-error-rate (BER) sink thresholds/mantissa-exponent values. As a monitoring tool it is used for optical hardware/signal-quality status: tracking configured FEC and BER threshold parameters alongside channel configuration to detect optical signal degradation, and it defines OTN notification objects for alerting on optical-transport faults. It explicitly builds on RFC 3591 (optical interface MIB) and the ITU-T/IETF Black Link and G.698.2 draft standards, showing clear dependency on those base optical-transport standards. It is deployed on Juniper Networks optical/DWDM transport platforms used in long-haul or metro optical networks requiring precise per-channel optical parameter monitoring, where JNX-OPT-IF-EXT-MIB SNMP monitoring tracks FEC and BER thresholds to catch optical signal degradation early.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JNX-OPT-IF-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper Networks DWDM/optical transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator reviews jnxoptIfOChConfigExtTable/jnxoptIfOChConfigExtEntry to check jnxoptIfOChBitRateLineCoding and jnxoptIfOChFEC settings on an optical channel, then monitors jnxoptIfOChSinkMaximumBERMantissa and jnxoptIfOChSinkMaximumBERExponent to see if the received bit-error rate is approaching the configured maximum threshold, signaling optical signal degradation. The jnxoptIfOPSmConfigTable's jnxoptIfOPSmFiberTypeRecommendation and jnxoptIfOPSmDirectionality would be checked to confirm the multiplex-section fiber type and direction match the physical fiber plant, and jnxoptIfOTNNotifications would deliver a trap if an OTN-layer fault occurs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • optical channel FEC configuration
  • bit-error-rate threshold vs. actual
  • channel spacing/bit-rate coding
  • fiber type/directionality configuration
  • OTN fault notifications

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using jnxoptIfOTNPMCurrentFECCorrectedErr OID:

Select a Juniper Networks DWDM/optical transport platform (Black Link/G.698.2 extension) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type jnxoptIfOTNPMCurrentFECCorrectedErr into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of bits corrected by the FEC are counted in the interval. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
