Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces

Description: Provides management objects for configuring and monitoring Cisco Ethernet access interfaces and service demarcation features.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ETHERNET-ACCESS-MIB?

CISCO-ETHERNET-ACCESS-MIB provides management objects for Cisco edge/access devices that sit at the customer-facing boundary of a Metro Ethernet network, mapping subscriber traffic into the service provider's network over CAT5 or fiber access media. It exposes port-level configuration and capability data (port type, capability flags) and VLAN-mapping tables for UNI (User-Network Interface) ports, including maximum supported NNI and UNI/VLAN-community port counts. Its monitoring relevance is configuration/capability-status oriented: administrators check ceaPortType/ceaPortCapability to confirm an edge port is correctly provisioned for its access technology and use ceaUNIVlanTable to verify VLAN-to-community mappings are correct for subscriber traffic separation, rather than tracking physical sensors. It is a Cisco extension layered on top of general interface (IF-MIB) and VLAN MIBs, adding Metro Ethernet edge-device semantics. It is deployed on Cisco Metro Ethernet edge/access devices used by service providers to demarcate and map customer Ethernet services. Engineers can download the CISCO-ETHERNET-ACCESS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ETHERNET-ACCESS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Metro Ethernet edge/access device

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ceaPortTable/ceaPortEntry for ceaPortType and ceaPortCapability on a given access port to confirm it's configured for the expected UNI role, and check ceaUNIVlanTable/ceaUNIVlanEntry's ceaUNIVlanType to verify subscriber VLANs are mapped into the correct community. Comparing configured port counts against ceaMaxNNIPorts/ceaMaxUNIVlanCommunityPorts would reveal whether the device is nearing its supported scale limits for new subscriber turn-ups.

What Can Be Monitored

  • access port type/capability
  • UNI VLAN-to-community mapping
  • NNI port count vs maximum
  • UNI/VLAN community port scale
