Organization: IETF STORage Maintenance (STORM) Working Group

Last Updated: 2014-02-18

Category: Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Manages iSCSI (SCSI over TCP) implementations, providing configuration, fault, and statistics for iSCSI targets, initiators, sessions, and connections.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring ISCSI-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is ISCSI-MIB?

This is the IETF standard MIB for managing iSCSI (SCSI over TCP/IP) implementations, covering iSCSI targets, initiators, sessions, and connections. It exposes instance-level attributes such as protocol version support, vendor identification, and counts of configured portals/nodes/sessions, alongside notification and conformance groups. It is used to monitor the software/service status of the iSCSI stack, particularly session-failure counts, which reveal connectivity or storage-access problems between initiators and targets. As an IETF MIB it is a standards-based module with no vendor dependency, often deployed alongside standard TCP and interface MIBs. It is deployed on storage servers, SANs, and hosts using iSCSI for block storage access over IP networks. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the ISCSI-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ISCSI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • iSCSI targets, initiators, and storage servers/SANs

Monitoring Examples

iscsiInstanceAttributesTable/iscsiInstanceAttributesEntry, indexed by iscsiInstIndex, exposes iscsiInstDescr, iscsiInstVendorID, and iscsiInstVendorVersion for identifying the iSCSI implementation, while iscsiInstPortalNumber, iscsiInstNodeNumber, and iscsiInstSessionNumber track how many portals/nodes/sessions are active. An admin polling iscsiInstSsnFailures would detect a rising count indicating iSCSI sessions are repeatedly failing to establish, pointing to a network or target-side storage problem.

What Can Be Monitored

  • iSCSI instance version/vendor info
  • portal/node/session counts
  • session failure count

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using iscsiInstSsnFailures OID:

Select a device implementing ISCSI-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type iscsiInstSsnFailures into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object counts the number of times a session belonging to this instance has failed. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
