Description: Intel Point-to-Point Protocol MIB providing SNMP objects for PPP link configuration, authentication, and compression settings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is INTEL-PPP-MIB?

INTEL-PPP-MIB is an Intel MIB for monitoring Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) link negotiation state on Intel networking equipment, covering the family of control protocols layered over PPP. It exposes per-interface negotiation state for LCP (Link Control Protocol), IPCP, IPXCP, BCP (bridging), CCP (compression), ECP (encryption), and BACP (bandwidth allocation). It is used to monitor the software/protocol status of WAN links, since a stuck or failed negotiation state on any of these sub-protocols directly explains why a dial-up or leased-line connection isn't passing traffic. It complements the standard IETF PPP MIB family (RFC 1471-1474 series) and shares interface indexing conventions with IF-MIB. It is deployed on Intel WAN routers/access devices that terminate PPP links, used to diagnose connectivity problems at the protocol-negotiation layer. Engineers can download the INTEL-PPP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in INTEL-PPP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Intel WAN/dial-up routers (PPP-capable devices)

Monitoring Examples

For a WAN interface identified by pppLinkProtoStateIfIndex in pppLinkProtoStateTable, an administrator would poll pppLinkProtoStateLcpState to confirm the link control protocol reached an "opened" state. If pppLinkProtoStateIpcpState remains stuck negotiating while LCP is open, that points to an IP-layer configuration mismatch between the two PPP peers. pppLinkProtoStateCcpState and pppLinkProtoStateEcpState reveal whether compression or encryption negotiation succeeded, which would explain reduced throughput or a failed secure link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PPP link type per interface
  • LCP negotiation state
  • IPCP/IPXCP negotiation state
  • bridging (BCP) state
  • compression (CCP) state
  • encryption (ECP) and bandwidth allocation (BACP) state
