Category: Protocol: PPP, Vendor: H3C/HH3C, Vendor: HP/HPE

Description: Manages PPPoE server session tables, subscriber authentication, and IP address assignment on HP/Comware broadband devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-PPPOE-SERVER-MIB?

HPN-ICF-PPPOE-SERVER-MIB is an HP/Comware ICF MIB for managing a device acting as a PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) server, terminating broadband subscriber sessions and handling authentication and IP address assignment. It exposes session-capacity scalars (maximum vs. current sessions), authentication counters (requests, successes, failures), and configurable thresholds for abnormal or normal session-offline rates. Its monitoring value is service-availability and software health: administrators track current session count against the maximum to catch capacity exhaustion, and monitor authentication failure rates and abnormal-offline thresholds to detect subscriber authentication problems or mass disconnection events. It is a self-contained vendor MIB with no strong dependency on external standard MIBs beyond general PPP/RADIUS concepts implied by authentication. It is deployed on HP/H3C Comware broadband access routers/BRAS-type devices terminating PPPoE subscriber sessions. Engineers can download the HPN-ICF-PPPOE-SERVER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-PPPOE-SERVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP/H3C Comware broadband access router (PPPoE/BRAS)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls hpnicfPPPoEServerCurrSessions against hpnicfPPPoEServerMaxSessions to see how close the server is to its session capacity limit. A sudden rise in hpnicfPPPoEServerAuthFailures relative to hpnicfPPPoEServerAuthRequests indicates a RADIUS/authentication backend problem or a wave of invalid credentials. Crossing the configured hpnicfPPPoESAbnormOffsThreshold or hpnicfPPPoESAbnormOffPerThreshold would flag a mass session drop-off event, such as an uplink flap disconnecting many subscribers at once.

What Can Be Monitored

  • current vs maximum PPPoE sessions
  • authentication request/success/failure counts
  • abnormal session-offline rate
  • normal session-offline rate threshold

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpnicfPPPoEServerAuthRequests OID:

Select an HP/H3C Comware broadband access router (PPPoE server/BRAS) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpnicfPPPoEServerAuthRequests into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of authentication requests. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
