Description: IEEE 802.1 MIB for Provider Backbone Bridging Traffic Engineering (802.1Qay) managing PBB-TE paths and protection.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IEEE8021-PBBTE-MIB?

IEEE8021-PBBTE-MIB is a vendor-neutral IEEE standards MIB, part of IEEE 802.1Q, defining management objects for Provider Backbone Bridging - Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE, IEEE 802.1Qay), a carrier-Ethernet technology for engineered point-to-point paths with protection switching. It exposes configuration and status data for protection groups, shared protection group membership, and associated maintenance-domain/maintenance-association linkages used in PBB-TE path protection. Its monitoring focus is network-path and protection-state oriented rather than classic hardware health: operators use it to confirm which working and protection maintenance associations back a given protection group and to track row status and storage type for provisioned entries, with associated notifications signaling protection-switching events. It is tightly coupled to other IEEE 802.1 MIBs for Connectivity Fault Management (maintenance domains/associations) since PBB-TE protection groups reference those constructs directly. It is typically deployed on carrier-grade Ethernet switches/bridges in metro or backbone networks implementing engineered, protected Ethernet paths, and network engineers often consult an IEEE8021-PBBTE-MIB reference to confirm exact object definitions before provisioning.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IEEE8021-PBBTE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • carrier-grade Ethernet switch/bridge supporting IEEE 802.1Qay PBB-TE

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ieee8021PbbTeProtectionGroupListTable/ieee8021PbbTeProtectionGroupListEntry, keyed by ieee8021PbbTeProtectionGroupListGroupId, to see which ieee8021PbbTeProtectionGroupListWorkingMA and ieee8021PbbTeProtectionGroupListProtectionMA maintenance associations back a given engineered path, and watch ieee8021PbbTeProtectionGroupListRowStatus to confirm a protection group is active. The ieee8021PbbTeMASharedGroupTable would be checked when multiple protection groups share underlying maintenance associations, to verify shared-group membership is consistent. ieee8021PbbTeNotifications would fire when a protection-switching event occurs, alerting operators to a working-path failure.

What Can Be Monitored

  • protection group working/protection MA assignment
  • protection group row status
  • shared protection group membership
  • protection-switching notifications
