Description: IEEE 802.1 MIB for Port Extensions (802.1BR) managing bridge port extension for hierarchical port architectures.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IEEE8021-PE-MIB?

This is a vendor-neutral IEEE 802.1BR standards MIB for Bridge Port Extension, used to manage hierarchical port-extender architectures where a controlling bridge manages many extended ports on remote Port Extenders. It exposes a port table describing each extended port's type, upstream Cascade/Control-plane address, E-Channel ID (ECID), and per-port error/discontinuity counters. Its monitoring role centers on the health and error rate of the extended-port fabric: tracking request/response errors on both the bridge and PE side reveals control-channel communication faults between a controlling bridge and its port extenders. As an 802.1BR standard it is designed for architectures layered on top of standard 802.1Q bridging, complementing rather than replacing base bridge MIBs. It is typically deployed in data center or campus environments using port-extender/fabric-extender hardware to scale port count from a centralized controlling bridge. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the IEEE8021-PE-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IEEE8021-PE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, IEEE 802.1BR standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • port extender / fabric extender and controlling bridge architecture

Monitoring Examples

An operator walks ieee8021BridgePEPortTable (keyed by ieee8021BridgePEPortComponentId and ieee8021BridgePEPort) to read ieee8021BridgePEPortType, ieee8021BridgePEPortUpstreamCSPAddress, and ieee8021BridgePEPortEcid, confirming each extended port is correctly cascaded to its upstream controlling bridge. Rising ieee8021BridgePEPortRxrqErrorsBridge or ieee8021BridgePEPortRxrqErrorsPE counters, checked against ieee8021BridgePECounterDiscontinuityTime, would indicate control-plane communication errors between the bridge and a specific port extender, useful for isolating a failing cascade link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • extended port type and ECID
  • upstream cascade port address
  • request/response error counts (bridge and PE side)
  • counter discontinuity time

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ieee8021BridgePEPortRxrqErrorsBridge OID:

Select a device implementing IEEE8021-PE-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ieee8021BridgePEPortRxrqErrorsBridge into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of PE CSP flow control overflow errors that have occured for requests on the Bridge. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
