What Is IBM-SYSTEM-LMSENSOR-MIB?

This is an IBM-proprietary MIB (part of the IBM System family of low-level hardware sensor MIBs) used to expose readings from onboard hardware monitoring sensors on IBM server platforms, similar in spirit to Linux lm-sensors. It centers on a temperature sensor table reporting current, nominal, minimum/maximum readable, and tolerance values per sensor. It is squarely a hardware-status monitoring MIB: its purpose is to let management software detect when a server's internal temperature drifts outside its normal operating envelope, often the earliest warning of a cooling failure or overloaded component. It has no apparent dependency beyond IBM's own enterprise MIB tree and is not built on a standard IETF hardware MIB. It is typically polled by IBM systems-management agents or third-party NMS platforms on IBM Power/System x rack and blade servers to feed temperature trending and threshold alerting. Engineers can download the IBM-SYSTEM-LMSENSOR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

If ibmSystemTemperatureSensorCurrentReading exceeds ibmSystemTemperatureSensorNormalMax by more than ibmSystemTemperatureSensorTolerance, or approaches ibmSystemTemperatureSensorMaxReadable, that signals a cooling problem such as blocked airflow or a fan failure inside the chassis. Comparing against ibmSystemTemperatureSensorNominalReading over time helps establish a baseline for detecting slow thermal degradation.
