Category: Technology: Switching/L2, Vendor: Huawei

Description: Huawei MAC address authentication MIB for configuring and monitoring 802.1X-less MAC-based port access control.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HUAWEI-MAC-AUTHEN-MIB?

HUAWEI-MAC-AUTHEN-MIB configures and monitors MAC-address-based authentication, a Huawei access-control feature that authenticates network access based on a device's MAC address rather than requiring 802.1X supplicant software. It exposes configuration objects for enabling MAC authentication per port/interface along with status objects reporting the authentication state of connected hosts. Its monitoring focus is on network access-control software state: administrators track whether MAC-authenticated hosts have successfully passed authentication and detect authentication failures, which could indicate an unauthorized device attempting network access or a misconfigured authentication server. It is a Huawei-private module conceptually parallel to the IEEE 802.1X standard and RADIUS-based authentication, though not directly derived from either standard MIB. It is deployed on Huawei access-layer switches in environments (such as IP phones, printers, or IoT devices) that cannot support 802.1X supplicants but still require port-based access control. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-MAC-AUTHEN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-MAC-AUTHEN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Huawei access-layer switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the MAC-authentication status objects per port to confirm connected devices, such as a printer or IP camera, have passed MAC authentication and are permitted network access. A host repeatedly failing MAC authentication on an access port would indicate either an unauthorized device attempting to connect or a MAC address not yet registered in the authentication database. No concrete sample object names were available in the source data for this MIB.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC authentication enable state per port
  • per-host MAC authentication status
  • MAC authentication failure events
