All MIBs › HUAWEI-ICMP-MIB

Category: IP and Core Protocols, Vendor: Huawei

Description: Huawei MIB that goes beyond standard RFC MIBs to offer extended ICMP statistics, rate-limiting configuration, and ICMP packet counters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HUAWEI-ICMP-MIB?

HUAWEI-ICMP-MIB is a Huawei vendor extension that supplements the standard ICMP MIB with additional counters and configuration for ICMP behavior on Huawei routers and switches, going beyond what RFC-standard ICMP MIBs expose. It provides granular ICMP error/packet counters (bad code, bad length, checksum errors, too-short packets, old-style/short outbound ICMP) as well as rate-limiting related configuration under the rIcmp branch. Its monitoring role is centered on network-layer protocol health rather than physical hardware, letting an operator see abnormal ICMP traffic patterns -- such as a rising count of malformed or truncated ICMP packets -- that can indicate a misbehaving neighbor, a network attack, or a device generating malformed responses due to a software defect. It extends the standard IETF ICMP MIB (RFC 2011/4293) rather than replacing it, so it should be polled alongside that standard module for complete ICMP visibility. It's deployed in Huawei router/switch networks where operators want finer-grained ICMP diagnostics than the base standard provides, often for troubleshooting network-layer faults or attack detection, typically starting with a HUAWEI-ICMP-MIB download to load the module into their monitoring platform.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-ICMP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Huawei routers
  • Huawei switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll icmpInBadCode, icmpInBadLen, and icmpInChecksum to detect malformed ICMP packets arriving at the device, which often points to a buggy peer, packet corruption in transit, or a crafted attack packet. A rising icmpInTooShort or icmpOutShort/icmpOutOldIcmp count could reveal a device generating or receiving truncated/legacy-format ICMP messages, prompting further investigation into the source of the malformed traffic under the rIcmp configuration branch.

What Can Be Monitored

  • malformed ICMP packet counts (bad code, bad length, checksum)
  • truncated/short ICMP packet counts
  • legacy-format outbound ICMP counts
  • ICMP rate-limiting configuration
