All MIBs › HPOV-OVIS-MIB
Organization: Hewlett-Packard, OpenView Internet Services
Last Updated: 2004-05-19
Category: Domain: Network Management, Vendor: HP/HPE
Description: Defines SNMP objects and traps for HP OpenView Internet Services (OVIS) availability monitoring integration.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is HPOV-OVIS-MIB?
HPOV-OVIS-MIB defines the SNMP trap objects used by HP OpenView Internet Services (OVIS), a synthetic/service-level monitoring add-on to the HP OpenView Network Node Manager platform, to report threshold violations detected by service probes. Rather than exposing polled state tables, it is largely a trap-oriented (notification) MIB carrying contextual variables about the target being probed, the probe type, and the resulting alarm. It supports monitoring software/service status by reporting hpOVISTargetHost (the monitored endpoint), hpOVISProbeSystem/hpOVISProbeType (which synthetic test triggered the alarm), hpOVISAlarmText (a human-readable violation description), and hpOVISDrillDownUrl (a link into OVIS for further diagnosis), effectively surfacing service-availability or response-time threshold breaches rather than raw hardware metrics. It is inherently dependent on the HP OpenView NNM/OVIS management platform itself, since these traps are only meaningful when received and cross-referenced by that system or another NMS configured to consume them. It is deployed in enterprise NOCs running HP OpenView to provide end-to-end synthetic transaction monitoring (web, mail, DNS, etc.) across distributed service endpoints. Engineers can download the HPOV-OVIS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPOV-OVIS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- servers/services monitored via HP OpenView Internet Services (OVIS)
- network endpoints synthetically probed (web, mail, DNS servers)
Monitoring Examples
When an OVIS probe detects a threshold violation, it emits an hpOVISTraps notification carrying hpOVISTargetHost and hpOVISProbeType so the receiving NMS knows which service test failed on which endpoint, along with hpOVISAlarmText describing the violation and hpOVISDrillDownUrl linking back into OVIS for root-cause detail. An admin receiving this trap would follow the drill-down URL to see the historical trend for that probe and confirm whether the service has actually recovered.
What Can Be Monitored
- service probe target host
- probe type (e.g. HTTP/DNS/mail)
- alarm/threshold-violation text
- drill-down link to OVIS console
