All MIBs › HPOV-SNMPSEC-MIB
Category: Domain: Network Management, Domain: Security, Vendor: HP/HPE
Description: Manages SNMP security configuration including community and access control within HP OpenView environments.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is HPOV-SNMPSEC-MIB?
HPOV-SNMPSEC-MIB is a small HP OpenView-internal MIB module (under the hp.nm.openView/hpOVSNMPSecurity OID arc) that, contrary to a broader "SNMP community/access control" reading of its name, defines just one object family used purely as an internal protocol-carrier between the OpenView SNMP engine and an SNMPv2 Security Proxy. Its sole textual convention, OVTDAddress, is a compact transport-domain/address encoding (modeled on RFC 1906's TDomain/TAddress pair, e.g. UDP/IP, CLNS, CONS, DDP, IPX), and its sole object, hpOVSecureTarget, carries the destination or original-source transport address of an SNMP message as it's relayed between the OV engine and the security proxy — the object is explicitly not exposed to the OV application or the target SNMP agent, so it is not something an operator polls for security-policy visibility. Rather than modeling community strings or access-control lists directly, it documents the internal plumbing HP OpenView used historically to route messages through an SNMPv2 Security Proxy. It depends only on SNMPv2-SMI and SNMPv2-CONF for its base types, and it was deployed as part of classic HP OpenView Network Node Manager installations that used an SNMPv2 Security Proxy for community-based authentication; administrators reverse-engineering legacy OpenView SNMP proxy behavior may still consult the HPOV-SNMPSEC-MIB MIB for this object's format.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPOV-SNMPSEC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-specific to HP OpenView Network Node Manager (legacy), not tied to a monitored network device
Monitoring Examples
A protocol analyst inspecting messages exchanged between the OpenView SNMP engine and its SNMPv2 Security Proxy decodes the appended hpOVSecureTarget octet string to recover the original transport domain/address of the request; a malformed or unrecognized domain octet in that value would indicate a proxy/engine version mismatch rather than a genuine target-address problem.
What Can Be Monitored
- transport domain/address encoding used by the OV-to-proxy protocol
- relayed message destination/source address
- presence of the security-proxy relay object in captured OV-to-proxy traffic
