Category: Technology: Switching/L2, Vendor: H3C/HH3C, Vendor: HP/HPE
Description: Manages storm control thresholds and actions for broadcast, multicast, and unknown-unicast on HP/Comware switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is HPN-ICF-STORM-CONSTRAIN-MIB?
The HPN-ICF-STORM-CONSTRAIN-MIB is an HP Networking (Comware/ICF) private module that manages storm control on switch ports, protecting the network from broadcast, multicast, and unknown-unicast traffic storms that can overwhelm switch hardware and links. It exposes per-port configurable upper and lower thresholds (in configurable units) for each traffic type, along with the port's current controlled/normal status and trap configuration for threshold violations. Its monitoring value is both configuration and fault/status oriented: administrators watch hpnicfStormCtrlPortStatus to see if a port has been placed into a controlled (forwarding-blocked) state due to an over-threshold flux, which is a direct signal of a traffic storm or a misbehaving connected device. It is a vendor extension built on top of standard bridge/interface MIB concepts for identifying the affected port, and works alongside standard SNMP trap delivery mechanisms. It is deployed on HP/H3C Comware-based enterprise switches to protect LAN segments from broadcast/multicast storms, commonly in campus and data center access layers. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the HPN-ICF-STORM-CONSTRAIN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-STORM-CONSTRAIN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- HP/H3C Comware-based enterprise switches
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll hpnicfStormCtrlTable/hpnicfStormCtrlEntry to check hpnicfStormCtrlBroadcastUpper/hpnicfStormCtrlBroadcastLower thresholds against current traffic, and watch hpnicfStormCtrlPortStatus for a transition to "controlled" indicating the port stopped forwarding due to storm suppression. A port stuck in controlled status with high hpnicfStormCtrlMulticastUnit values would point to a loop or misconfigured multicast source on that segment. hpnicfStormTrapType and hpnicfStormTrapThreshold configure when a storm-related SNMP trap should fire so operators are alerted without needing to poll continuously.
What Can Be Monitored
- broadcast/multicast/unicast storm thresholds
- per-port storm-controlled status
- storm trap threshold configuration
