Description: HP ICF SNMP MIB for multicast DNS (mDNS/Bonjour) gateway configuration enabling cross-VLAN service discovery on HP ProCurve switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPICF-MDNS-MIB?

HPICF-MDNS-MIB is an HP proprietary MIB within the ICF suite for managing the multicast DNS (mDNS/Bonjour) gateway feature on HP ProCurve switches, which relays service-discovery traffic across VLAN boundaries. It exposes configuration objects controlling whether and how the mDNS gateway operates on the switch, such as enabling relay between specific VLANs. Its monitoring relevance is primarily a software feature-status check: confirming the mDNS gateway is enabled and correctly relaying Bonjour/mDNS traffic between VLANs, which affects whether services like printers or AirPlay devices are discoverable across network segments, rather than reporting hardware health. It depends on the mDNS/Bonjour protocol standard (RFC 6762/6763) for the traffic it relays, layered with HP's VLAN and switch configuration model. It is typically deployed in campus or education/enterprise Wi-Fi environments using HP ProCurve switches where cross-VLAN device discovery (e.g., AirPlay, network printers) is required. Engineers can download the HPICF-MDNS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPICF-MDNS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve switch

Monitoring Examples

No sample_objects were supplied for this MIB, but a plausible implementation includes a per-VLAN or global gateway-enable object. An administrator would poll this to confirm the mDNS gateway is active on the relevant VLANs, and a disabled or misconfigured state would reveal why Bonjour-discoverable devices are not appearing across VLAN boundaries.

What Can Be Monitored

  • mDNS gateway enable status
  • cross-VLAN relay configuration
