Description: HP SNMP MIB for switch stack configuration and member management on HP networking products supporting stacking.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-STACK-MIB?

HP-STACK-MIB is an HP proprietary MIB managing switch stacking features, where multiple physical HP switches are joined to operate as a single logical unit. It exposes configuration and status objects describing stack membership, member roles (e.g., commander/standby/member), and stack topology. Its monitoring value is centered on hardware/unit status: confirming which stack members are present and healthy, detecting a member that has dropped out of the stack, or identifying a role change (such as an unexpected commander failover) that could indicate a hardware or link failure within the stack. It relies on HP's own stacking architecture but conceptually parallels standard entity/module presence tracking found in ENTITY-MIB. It is typically deployed in wiring-closet or data-center environments where multiple HP ProCurve switches are stacked for simplified management and increased port density. Engineers can download the HP-STACK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-STACK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve stackable switch

Monitoring Examples

No sample_objects were supplied, but a plausible implementation includes a stack member table listing each unit's member ID, role, and operational status. An administrator would poll this table to confirm all expected stack members are present and in the correct role, and a missing member ID or unexpected role change would reveal a stack link failure or a unit that has gone offline.

What Can Be Monitored

  • stack member presence
  • stack member role (commander/standby/member)
  • stack topology/link status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpStackOperStatus OID:

Select an HP ProCurve stackable switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpStackOperStatus into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This is the current operational status of the stack. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is 'fragmentInactive', since that means this fragment of the stack isn't participating normally. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
