Description: HP SNMP MIB for memory and processor utilization monitoring on HP networking devices including CPU load and memory pool statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-MEMPROC-MIB?

HP-MEMPROC-MIB is an HP proprietary MIB for the ProCurve product line that reports memory and CPU/processor utilization on the device. It exposes a CPU table with load averages and busy percentage plus a memory table describing named memory pools and their in-use amounts. This MIB is squarely a hardware/software health-monitoring module: it lets an administrator track CPU load (1/5/15-minute averages and percent busy) and memory pool consumption to detect an overloaded or memory-starved switch before it affects forwarding performance. It has no strong dependency on other MIBs beyond general SNMP framework conventions, functioning as a self-contained system-resource MIB. It is typically deployed across HP ProCurve switches and routers as part of routine capacity and health monitoring by network management systems, with the HP-MEMPROC-MIB MIB serving as the standard reference for these CPU and memory checks.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-MEMPROC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve switch
  • HP ProCurve router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll hpmpCPUTable (indexed by hpmpCPUIndex) to read hpmpCPULoad1min, hpmpCPULoad5min, hpmpCPULoad15min, and hpmpCPUPctBusy, alerting if sustained load exceeds a threshold. Correspondingly, hpmpMemTable entries (hpmpMemDescr, hpmpMemInUse) reveal which named memory pool is consuming excessive memory, useful for catching a memory leak before the device becomes unstable.

What Can Be Monitored

  • 1/5/15-minute CPU load averages
  • CPU percent busy
  • named memory pool utilization
  • memory in use per pool

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpmpCPUPctBusy OID:

Select an HP ProCurve switch/router (CPU/memory utilization) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpmpCPUPctBusy into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object reports the percentage time the CPU was actively engaged during the last interval. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if utilization exceeds 85%, a common warning threshold before sustained high load affects performance. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
