Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Cisco Devices
Description: Manages Cisco VLAN groups that map VLANs to policy groups for simplified VLAN administration.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-VLAN-GROUP-MIB?
CISCO-VLAN-GROUP-MIB is a Cisco Catalyst switch MIB for VLAN Group Mapping, a feature that groups multiple VLANs under a single named group for simplified policy application (such as applying QoS or access policy to a whole group rather than each VLAN individually). It exposes a configuration table mapping group names to VLAN membership bitmaps spanning up to 4000+ VLANs, along with row-creation/storage-type controls. This is primarily a configuration-plane MIB rather than a runtime performance/fault MIB, so its monitoring value is in verifying that VLAN group membership matches intended network policy and catching unintended additions/removals of VLANs from a group. It depends on the standard VLAN numbering model (IEEE 802.1Q) that underlies Cisco's Catalyst VLAN infrastructure. It is deployed on Cisco Catalyst switches using VLAN groups to simplify multi-VLAN policy administration. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-VLAN-GROUP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-VLAN-GROUP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco Catalyst switches
Monitoring Examples
cvgConfigTable/cvgConfigEntry exposes cvgConfigGroupName alongside cvgConfigVlansFirst2K and cvgConfigVlansSecond2K bitmaps identifying exactly which VLANs (1-4094) belong to a named group. An admin comparing the live bitmap against the intended VLAN list can catch configuration drift, such as a VLAN accidentally left out of (or included in) a policy group, and cvgConfigRowStatus shows whether a group entry is active or being modified.
What Can Be Monitored
- VLAN group membership (VLANs 1-4094)
- group name-to-VLAN mapping
- group row/storage status
- VLAN group table size
