Description: Hirschmann HiOS (HM2) MAC notification MIB for generating traps on MAC address table add/remove events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HM2-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB?

HM2-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB is a Hirschmann HiOS proprietary MIB that generates SNMP traps whenever a unicast MAC address is learned or removed from a switch's forwarding database (FDB). It exposes configuration for enabling notification globally and per-interface, along with a notification interval, plus per-interface state showing the last learned/removed MAC and its status. Rather than hardware health, its monitoring value is network-security and topology-change awareness: administrators use MAC learn/remove events to detect unauthorized devices being plugged in, port flapping, or unexpected host movement across the network. It complements the standard bridge/FDB MIBs (IEEE 802.1D/Q, BRIDGE-MIB) by adding an event-notification layer on top of forwarding-table changes. It is typically deployed on Hirschmann industrial switches in secure or access-controlled network segments where unauthorized device connections must be flagged quickly, making HM2-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB SNMP monitoring a key layer of network access security.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HM2-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Hirschmann HiOS industrial Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator enables hm2MACNotifyAdminState and sets hm2MACNotifyInterval to control how often batched notifications fire, then monitors hm2MACNotifyInterfaceTable (rows via hm2MACNotifyInterfaceEntry) for per-port hm2MACNotifyInterfaceMACAddr and hm2MACNotifyInterfaceMACStatus values showing the most recent learn/remove event on each interface. A burst of new hm2MACNotifyInterfaceMACAddr entries on a normally quiet access port could indicate a rogue device or hub was connected. The hm2MACNotifyMibNotifications group defines the actual trap objects sent to a network management station when such an event occurs.
