What Is IEEE8021-TEIPS-MIB?

IEEE8021-TEIPS-MIB is a vendor-neutral IEEE 802.1Q standards-track MIB module supporting Traffic Engineering Instance Protection Switching (TEIPS) for Provider Backbone Bridge Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) networks. It exposes configuration and status data for Interconnection Protection Groups (IPGs) and Traffic Engineering Service Instances (TESIs), describing the working and protection Maintenance Association (MA) endpoints and ports used for path protection. In monitoring terms it is used chiefly to track the operational state of protection-switching groups - whether traffic currently rides the working or protection path - rather than classic hardware sensors like temperature or CPU load. It depends heavily on other IEEE 802.1 MIBs, notably 802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management, since TEIPS protection groups are built on the Maintenance Association identifiers defined there. It is typically deployed on carrier-grade Ethernet bridges implementing PBB-TE in telecom/service-provider backbone networks that require fast, deterministic protection switching. Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ieee8021TeipsIpgTable/ieee8021TeipsIpgEntry to check ieee8021TeipsIpgWorkingMA and ieee8021TeipsIpgProtectionMA alongside ieee8021TeipsIpgWorkingPortNumber and ieee8021TeipsIpgProtectionPortNumber to confirm which port currently carries traffic for a given protection group identified by ieee8021TeipsIpgid. If the working path fails, these fields reflect a switchover to the protection port, and ieee8021TeipsTesiTable/ieee8021TeipsTesiIndex show which traffic engineering service instances were affected. Repeated switchovers surfaced via ieee8021TeipsNotifications would indicate a flapping or degraded working path needing investigation.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ieee8021TeipsIpgConfigState OID:

Select a Carrier Ethernet switches/bridge as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ieee8021TeipsIpgConfigState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This column indicates the current state of the protection switching state machine for an IPG. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value stays at 'waitToRestore' longer than a normal protection-switching transition takes, since that means the IPG hasn't reverted back to its working path. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
