Description: Manages Sun Microsystems hardware registration and inventory objects for enterprise server platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is HDREG-MIB2?
HDREG-MIB2 is Sun Microsystems' proprietary hardware registration MIB, used to register and enumerate management modules within Sun's SunNetManager/SunSymon-era enterprise server and network management framework rather than to expose live telemetry itself. Its objects form a registration table (hdregtable/hdregentry) that lists installed management modules by name, label, and root OID, effectively acting as a directory of which vendor sub-agents/modules are present on a Sun management agent. Because it is a meta-registration MIB, its primary monitoring value is discovering which hardware/software management modules are loaded and reachable on the agent rather than reporting temperature, CPU, or disk metrics directly; those come from the modules it registers. It is inherently dependent on the broader Sun enterprise-agent framework (SunSymon/Sun agent architecture) since its entries point at the root OIDs of other, separately-defined Sun MIBs. It was deployed on legacy Sun Microsystems servers and network elements running the Sun enterprise SNMP agent during the SunNetManager/Solstice era. Engineers can download the HDREG-MIB2 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HDREG-MIB2. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Sun Microsystems enterprise servers
- Sun network elements running the Sun/SunNetManager SNMP agent
Monitoring Examples
An NMS would walk hdregtable/hdregentry to retrieve modname, label, and rootoid for each registered module, then use svflag to determine whether a given module is currently active/supervised. Discovering a new rootoid entry under the sun/agent/sunsymon branch after a firmware or agent upgrade would reveal that a new hardware or software sub-agent module has been installed and registered. Absence of an expected module entry would indicate that a management module failed to load on the agent.
What Can Be Monitored
- registered hardware/software module names
- module labels
- module root OIDs
- module supervision/active flag
