Category: Technology: High Availability, Vendor: Foundry/Brocade

Description: Brocade Foundry VSRP (Virtual Switch Redundancy Protocol) MIB providing Layer 2 and Layer 3 redundancy configuration and state management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FOUNDRY-SN-VSRP-MIB?

FOUNDRY-SN-VSRP-MIB is a Brocade (formerly Foundry Networks) proprietary MIB module for managing VSRP, a Layer 2/Layer 3 gateway redundancy protocol used on Foundry/Brocade switches and routers to provide first-hop failover similar to VRRP/HSRP. It exposes configuration and operational-state data for VSRP-enabled interfaces and virtual routers, including operating mode, per-interface VRID limits, and virtual router table entries. For monitoring, it is used mainly to track software/protocol state and fault conditions rather than physical hardware sensors: administrators watch interface state-change traps and virtual router table entries to detect when a redundancy group has failed over from the master switch to a backup, indicating an outage or link failure upstream. It has a notable functional relationship to the IETF VRRP standard, since VSRP is Foundry's enhanced, backward-compatible variant of that protocol. It is typically deployed on Brocade/Foundry NetIron, FastIron, or BigIron switches and routers used as default-gateway redundancy pairs in enterprise or data-center networks, where FOUNDRY-SN-VSRP-MIB SNMP monitoring helps confirm failover state between master and backup switches.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FOUNDRY-SN-VSRP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Brocade/Foundry NetIron, FastIron, and BigIron switches and routers

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll snVsrpIfTable and snVsrpVirRtrTable to see the current operational state of each VSRP-protected interface and virtual router, checking whether the local device holds Master or Backup role. Receiving an snVsrpIfStateChangeTrap notification would indicate an unplanned failover, prompting investigation into why the previous master dropped out. snVsrpGroupOperModeVsrp confirms which redundancy mode (VSRP vs VRRP-compatible) is active, and snVsrpIfMaxNumVridPerIntf/snVsrpIfMaxNumVridPerSystem are checked against configured VRIDs to ensure scaling limits aren't being approached.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VSRP interface state (master/backup)
  • virtual router table status
  • interface state-change events/traps
  • VRRP statistics clear operations
  • configured VRIDs per interface/system

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using snVsrpVirRtrRxArpPktDropCnts OID:

Select a Brocade/Foundry NetIron/FastIron/BigIron switch/router (VSRP gateway redundancy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type snVsrpVirRtrRxArpPktDropCnts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The received vsrp ARP Packet Drop Counts. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
