What Is FOUNDRY-SN-APPLETALK-MIB?

FOUNDRY-SN-APPLETALK-MIB is a Brocade/Foundry proprietary MIB providing AppleTalk routing configuration and statistics for Foundry network devices. It exposes objects to enable AppleTalk routing, clear ARP/forwarding caches and routes, and track RTMP and ZIP protocol traffic counters. Its monitoring value is protocol-level: RTMP packet counters and ARP retransmission settings reveal whether AppleTalk routing adjacencies are actively exchanging updates, a software/protocol-state check rather than a hardware one. It is a standalone legacy Foundry protocol MIB with no dependency on other standard MIBs. It applies to legacy Foundry routers and Layer 3 switches still carrying AppleTalk traffic, largely a holdover from older Apple/NetWare-era networks. Engineers can download the FOUNDRY-SN-APPLETALK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FOUNDRY-SN-APPLETALK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. Monitoring Examples

An admin watches snRtATInRtmpPkts and snRtATOutRtmpPkts to confirm RTMP routing updates are being exchanged with AppleTalk neighbors, and can invoke snRtATClearArpCache or snRtATClearRoute to force cache refreshes; a sudden drop in RTMP packet counts would reveal a broken AppleTalk routing adjacency.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using snRtATInRtmpPkts OID:

Select a Brocade/Foundry router or switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type snRtATInRtmpPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The total number of RTMP packets received by this entity. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
