Description: Monitors optical transceiver parameters (power, wavelength, temperature) on Brocade optical interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BROCADE-OPTICAL-MONITORING-MIB?

BROCADE-OPTICAL-MONITORING-MIB is a Brocade vendor MIB for monitoring the physical-layer health of optical transceivers installed in Brocade switch/router ports. It exposes per-lane optical diagnostic data including transceiver temperature, transmit and receive optical power, and transmit bias current, each with both a raw value and a status/threshold indicator. Its monitoring purpose is directly about hardware status: temperature, Tx/Rx power and their status flags, and bias current let an operator detect a degrading or overheating optic before it causes a link failure, since digital optical monitoring data typically warns of transceiver aging or a dirty/damaged fiber connection ahead of a hard outage. It builds on industry-standard digital diagnostic monitoring conventions common across optical transceiver vendors, expressed through Brocade's own MIB structure. It is deployed on Brocade switches and routers with pluggable optical interfaces, especially in data-center and service-provider core/aggregation links where optical link quality is business-critical. Engineers can download the BROCADE-OPTICAL-MONITORING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BROCADE-OPTICAL-MONITORING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Brocade switch/router with pluggable optical transceivers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll bcsiOptMonLaneTable/bcsiOptMonLaneEntry indexed by bcsiOptMonLaneNum to check bcsiOptMonLaneTxPowerVal and bcsiOptMonLaneRxPowerVal against the corresponding bcsiOptMonLaneTxPowerStatus/RxPowerStatus alarm flags. A declining bcsiOptMonLaneRxPower value coupled with a warning bcsiOptMonLaneRxPowerStatus would reveal a degrading fiber link or contaminated connector before the link actually drops. Rising bcsiOptMonLaneTemperature alongside bcsiOptMonLaneTxBiasCurrent trending upward can also indicate an aging laser nearing end of life, visible via bcsiOptMonInfoTable for transceiver inventory context.

What Can Be Monitored

  • optical transceiver temperature
  • transmit/receive optical power and status
  • transmit bias current
  • per-lane optical monitoring alarms

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using bcsiOptMonLaneTxPowerStatus OID:

Select a Brocade switches/routers with pluggable optic as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type bcsiOptMonLaneTxPowerStatus into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object holds the status of the transmitter optical signal power for the lane in the interface, indicating whether this is normal or an alarm is present. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is 'highAlarm', 'highWarn', 'lowWarn', or 'lowAlarm', since those indicate the transmitter's optical power has moved outside its normal operating range. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
