Category: Alarm and Event Management, Vendor: Dell

Description: Dell Force10 Networks trap and event MIB defining SNMP notifications for system alerts, interface state changes, and hardware faults.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FORCE10-TRAP-EVENT-MIB?

FORCE10-TRAP-EVENT-MIB is a Dell (formerly Force10 Networks) proprietary MIB that provides a structured event/alarm log for SNMP traps generated by the switch, separating them into a history table of all logged trap events and an active table of unresolved, action-requiring events such as a card going down. It exposes per-event severity, type, free-text message, source OID, chassis slot/port, and timestamp, giving a centralized view of system alerts. This is directly a hardware/software fault-monitoring MIB: the active trap event table is specifically designed to surface conditions like a card-down state that persists until a corresponding clear event (e.g., card-up) is received, making it a primary tool for tracking outstanding hardware faults. It builds on the standard SNMP notification mechanism (SNMPv2-MIB/NOTIFICATION-TYPE) to generate the underlying traps that populate these tables. It is deployed on Dell Force10 chassis switches and routers to give operators a persistent, queryable alarm history beyond transient trap messages. Engineers can download the FORCE10-TRAP-EVENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FORCE10-TRAP-EVENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell Force10 (Dell Networking OS) chassis switch/router

Monitoring Examples

An operator investigating an outage would poll f10ActiveTrapEvent-derived tables to find unresolved events, then cross-reference f10HistoryTrapEventTable/f10HistoryTrapEventEntry entries by historyTrapEventSeqId to see historyTrapEventType and historyTrapEventSeverity for a 'card down' event, using historyTrapEventSlotPort to identify the affected chassis slot. historyTrapEventMsg gives a human-readable description and historyTrapEventTimeStamp establishes when the fault occurred, while f10MaxHistoryTableSize governs how much history is retained before older entries roll off. A card-down event lacking a matching card-up clear in the active table indicates the fault is still outstanding.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active unresolved fault/alarm events
  • historical trap event log
  • event severity and type
  • affected chassis slot/port
  • card up/down status
