Description: EXTENDED-CAPABILITIES-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is EXTENDED-CAPABILITIES-MIB?

EXTENDED-CAPABILITIES-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-oriented SNMP infrastructure module that defines a framework for an SNMP agent to advertise, and for a manager to negotiate, the use of extended (non-standard or optional) SNMP protocol capabilities. Rather than exposing device data such as interfaces or hardware sensors, it exposes meta-level capability-negotiation objects describing what optional SNMP features an agent supports. Because it operates at the protocol/session layer rather than the managed-device layer, it is not used to monitor hardware or software status like uptime, temperature, or CPU load - it exists purely to let management stations and agents agree on capability extensions before other, data-bearing MIBs are polled. It has an inherent dependency on the base SNMP framework (the SNMPv3 architecture and RFC 3411 series) since capability negotiation sits directly on top of the SNMP engine. It would be deployed wherever an SNMP agent implementation wants to signal support for proprietary or draft SNMP extensions to compatible management software. Engineers can download the EXTENDED-CAPABILITIES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EXTENDED-CAPABILITIES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any SNMP-managed network device/agent

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were supplied for this module, and its purpose is inherently protocol/negotiation-oriented rather than data-bearing, so no concrete monitoring scenario applies; it functions more like a capability-registration mechanism than a source of pollable operational metrics.
