Description: Eltex MES MAC notification MIB for configuring and receiving traps on MAC address table changes on MES switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ELTEX-MES-eltMacNotification-MIB?

ELTEX-MES-eltMacNotification-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Eltex for its MES switch family, covering the MAC address notification feature, including "MAC flapping" detection between ports. It exposes configuration objects to enable MAC notification and flapping-notification traps, along with objects capturing details of a detected flap event: the offending MAC address, VLAN, the first and second ports involved, and the time of the flap. Its monitoring value is fault-oriented: detecting Layer 2 topology problems—such as a MAC address rapidly moving between two ports, indicating a switching loop, misconfigured link, or duplicate/spoofed MAC—by watching for flap notifications and their detail objects. It builds on the general MAC-notification concept found in vendor bridge MIBs but is an Eltex-proprietary extension for the MES platform. It is deployed on Eltex MES switches in access networks needing rapid detection of MAC flapping to prevent broadcast storms or intermittent connectivity. Engineers can download the ELTEX-MES-eltMacNotification-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ELTEX-MES-eltMacNotification-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Eltex MES switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would enable eltMnFlappingFeatureEnabled and eltMnFlappingNotificationsEnabled, then monitor flap notifications populating eltMnFlappingAddress, eltMnFlappingVlanNumber, eltMnFlappingFirstPortId, and eltMnFlappingSecondPortId. A trap showing the same eltMnFlappingAddress alternating rapidly between the first and second port within a short eltMnFlappingTime window would indicate a Layer 2 loop or duplicate MAC condition on that VLAN.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC notification feature enable state
  • MAC flapping detection between ports
  • flapping MAC address and VLAN
  • ports involved in a flap event
  • time of flap event

RFC description

An Eltex Enterprise MIB for MAC notification events on Eltex MES (Multi-service Edge Switch) platforms. This MIB defines traps and objects related to MAC address changes and learning notifications in Eltex switching systems.

Start monitoring Eltex MES switch (MAC address notification/flap detection) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
