Category: Vendor: Eltex

Description: Eltex MES Loop-Back Detection MIB for detecting and responding to switching loops not covered by spanning tree.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ELTEX-MES-LBD-MIB?

This Eltex private enterprise MIB implements Loop-Back Detection (LBD) on Eltex MES switches, a feature that detects Layer 2 switching loops on a per-VLAN/per-port basis independently of (or in addition to) Spanning Tree Protocol. It exposes VLAN-based loop-detection configuration including a recovery timer, per-port enablement across VLAN ID ranges (1-1024, 1025-2048, 2049-3072, 3073-4094), and a VLAN state table reporting detected loop state per port/VLAN combination. Its monitoring purpose is fault detection: it reveals when a network loop has been detected on a specific port/VLAN, which typically causes the switch to shut down or block the offending port, and the recovery-time setting shows how long before the switch will automatically re-enable it. It functions as a complementary mechanism to standard STP MIBs rather than a strict dependency. It is deployed on Eltex MES access/aggregation switches in networks prone to accidental loop creation (e.g., unmanaged switches or client misconfiguration) where fast loop detection outside STP is valuable, making ELTEX-MES-LBD-MIB SNMP monitoring useful for catching loops before they disrupt the network.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ELTEX-MES-LBD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Eltex MES Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin walks eltLbdVlanBasedPortTable/eltLbdVlanBasedPortEntry to see which eltLbdVlanBasedPort has loop detection enabled and for which VLAN ID ranges (eltLbdVlanBasedVlanId1To1024, etc.), then checks eltLbdVlanBasedVlanStateTable/eltLbdVlanBasedVlanStateEntry to find a port/VLAN combination flagged as loop-detected. The eltLbdVlanBasedRecoveryTime value indicates how long the port will remain blocked before the switch attempts automatic recovery.

What Can Be Monitored

  • loop detection enable per port/VLAN range
  • detected loop state per port/VLAN
  • loop recovery timer
