Description: Manages Unidirectional Link Detection (UDLD) to detect one-way link failures on Dell switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Dell-UDLD-MIB?

Dell-UDLD-MIB is a Dell Networking enterprise MIB implementing Unidirectional Link Detection (UDLD), a Layer-2 protocol that detects one-way link failures — where a port can receive but not transmit traffic, or vice versa — that standard link-state monitoring alone can miss. It exposes per-port configuration and state objects (rlUdldPortAdminMode, rlUdldPortOperMode, rlUdldBidirectionalState) plus a neighbor discovery table (rlUdldNeighborTable) tracking detected neighbor device IDs and their ports. It is used to monitor the protocol-level health of switch ports — specifically whether each enabled port's link is confirmed bidirectional or has been flagged unidirectional — which is important for catching cabling or transceiver faults that could otherwise cause forwarding loops or blackholed traffic. It complements standard IEEE link-state and spanning-tree monitoring, referencing IF-MIB ifIndex values for its port identification, though it defines no other strict external MIB dependency. It is typically deployed on Dell switches in enterprise networks with fiber or long-haul copper links, where undetected unidirectional failures pose a loop risk. Engineers can download the Dell-UDLD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-UDLD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell Networking switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll rlUdldPortTable entries such as rlUdldPortAdminMode and rlUdldPortOperMode to confirm UDLD is enabled on a port, then check rlUdldBidirectionalState to see whether that port's link is bidirectional or has been declared unidirectional. Correlating a unidirectional state with rlUdldNeighborTable entries (rlUdldNeighborDeviceID, rlUdldNeighborPortIfIndex) helps pinpoint which physical link and neighboring device is experiencing a one-way fiber/cable fault, prompting a cabling check before it triggers a switching loop.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port UDLD admin/operational mode
  • port bidirectional link state
  • detected neighbor count
  • neighbor device ID and port mapping
