Description: Provides switch monitoring (SMON) statistics for the Dell VRTX chassis switch module.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Dell-VRTX-SMON-MIB?
This private MIB provides switch port monitoring/mirroring (SMON-style) configuration for the Dell PowerEdge VRTX chassis switch module, extending the RMON SMON concept within the RAD-derived embedded switch OS. It exposes port-copy (port mirroring) capability and mode configuration, including whether mirrored traffic includes VLAN tags and whether copy sessions are enabled, letting network staff capture traffic from one port to another for analysis. As status/monitoring data it mainly reports rlPortCopySupport (capability presence) and rlPortCopySessionsEnabled (whether a mirroring session is currently active) along with rlPortCopyMode, useful for confirming a diagnostic port-mirror session is correctly configured and running. It builds on IETF's RMON/SMON conceptual framework though implemented as a vendor-private module rather than the standard SMON-MIB. It is used in Dell VRTX chassis switch modules when administrators set up local traffic capture/mirroring for troubleshooting or intrusion-detection appliances, relying on Dell-VRTX-SMON-MIB SNMP monitoring to confirm mirror sessions are active and correctly configured.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-VRTX-SMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell PowerEdge VRTX chassis switch module
Monitoring Examples
An engineer setting up a packet capture would check rlPortCopySupport to confirm the hardware/firmware supports mirroring, then verify rlPortCopyMode and rlPortCopySessionsEnabled to ensure a session is active, and inspect rlPortCopyVlanTaggingTable/rlPortCopyVlanTaggingEntry to see if VLAN tags are preserved in mirrored frames. If rlPortCopySessionsEnabled unexpectedly shows disabled, it would explain why a monitoring tool attached to the mirror destination port is receiving no traffic.
What Can Be Monitored
- port mirroring capability support
- port copy mode
- mirror session enabled state
- VLAN tagging behavior on mirrored ports
