Category: Vendor: Dell

Description: Manages DNS client resolver configuration and server address settings on Dell network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Dell-DNSCL-MIB?

This is a Dell private enterprise MIB (part of the Dell MTS networking software family, rl-prefixed) that manages the DNS client resolver on Dell switches and routers. It exposes configuration data covering configured domain-name suffixes and DNS server addresses, each entry tagged with its source (e.g., static vs. DHCP-learned) and preference/priority order. While primarily configuration rather than hardware health, it supports software/service status monitoring in the sense that it lets an operator confirm the DNS resolver is correctly provisioned and that DHCP-derived DNS settings have been learned as expected, which underlies name-resolution-dependent services like NTP, syslog, and RADIUS lookups. It depends conceptually on the interface (ifIndex) associations to tie DNS servers/domains to specific interfaces. It's typically used in configuration auditing and troubleshooting of name-resolution failures on Dell enterprise network gear. Engineers can download the Dell-DNSCL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-DNSCL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell enterprise switch/router (MTS-based)

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling rlDnsClv2DomainNameTable can check rlDnsClv2DomainNameName and rlDnsClv2DomainNameSource to confirm whether the search domain came from static configuration or was learned dynamically via a given rlDnsClv2DomainNameIfIndex. Similarly, rlDnsClv2ServersTable exposes rlDnsClv2ServersPreference ordering across multiple DNS servers, so a mis-ordered or missing high-preference server explains slow or failed DNS lookups. The rlDnsClv2DomainNameRowStatus field lets an operator verify whether a particular domain-name entry is active or stale.

What Can Be Monitored

  • configured DNS servers
  • DNS server preference order
  • domain name suffix configuration
  • DNS source (static/dynamic)
  • interface-to-DNS association
  • row status of DNS entries
