Category: Hardware and Environment, Vendor: Dell

Description: Manages Alert Standards Format (ASF) platform events and alerts for Dell server hardware.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DELL-ASF-MIB?

DELL-ASF-MIB implements the DMTF Alert Standard Format (ASF) specification's Platform Event Trap objects for Dell server hardware, providing a standardized way for out-of-band management to receive hardware alert notifications even when the operating system is down. Its sample object asfPetEvts represents the ASF Platform Event Trap events group, which per the ASF standard covers hardware alert conditions such as fan failure, temperature/thermal events, voltage faults, chassis intrusion, and power supply problems. It is used specifically to monitor low-level hardware health and fault conditions on Dell servers -- fan and power supply status, thermal thresholds, and chassis security -- making it valuable for pre-OS or OS-independent hardware monitoring via a baseboard management controller. It directly implements the DMTF Alert Standard Format specification, a vendor-neutral standard, layered with Dell-specific object naming. It is deployed on Dell PowerEdge and similar server hardware equipped with ASF-capable management controllers for out-of-band hardware alerting, and a DELL-ASF-MIB download provides the module needed to load these traps into a monitoring platform.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DELL-ASF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell PowerEdge servers with ASF-capable management controllers

Monitoring Examples

A management station subscribes to traps generated from the asfPetEvts group to receive Platform Event Trap notifications the moment a monitored hardware condition, such as a fan failure or over-temperature event, occurs on a Dell server. Because ASF traps can be generated independent of OS state, this lets an admin detect a power supply or thermal fault even if the server's operating system has crashed or is not yet booted. A spike in PET events of a particular type would point an admin toward a specific failing hardware subsystem (e.g., cooling versus power) for dispatch to field service.

What Can Be Monitored

  • platform event trap notifications
  • fan failure alerts
  • thermal/temperature alerts
  • power supply fault alerts
  • chassis intrusion/voltage alerts
