Category: Domain: CATV/Cable, Standard: DOCSIS

Description: Manages DOCSIS Dynamic Range Frequency (DRF) upstream channel management on cable network equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DOCS-DRF-MIB?

DOCS-DRF-MIB is a CableLabs standard MIB whose object names indicate it actually covers the Downstream RF Interface (differing from the short description's 'Dynamic Range Frequency' label), used to manage the downstream radio-frequency characteristics of DOCSIS cable equipment. It exposes a docsDrfDownstreamTable describing each downstream RF channel and a companion docsDrfDownstreamCapabilitiesTable listing the frequency, bandwidth, power, modulation, interleaver, and J.83 annex capabilities that channel supports, along with whether concurrent services are possible. For monitoring, this is primarily an RF configuration/capability MIB rather than a fault counter: an operator uses it to verify a downstream channel's actual configured frequency and power match its advertised hardware capabilities, catching a misconfigured or under-capable downstream port before it causes modem registration failures. It is a companion to other DOCSIS PHY-layer MIBs (covering upstream channels and general cable device identity) that together describe the full RF plant configuration. It is deployed by cable operators on CMTS/edge devices to manage and audit downstream RF channel plant configuration, and though often searched for as the DOCS-DRF-MIB RFC, it is published as a CableLabs specification rather than a formal IETF RFC.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOCS-DRF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CMTS / cable headend edge device (downstream RF interface)
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based DOCSIS MIB

Monitoring Examples

Polling docsDrfDownstreamCapabilitiesTable/docsDrfDownstreamCapabilitiesEntry reveals docsDrfDownstreamCapabFrequency, docsDrfDownstreamCapabBandwidth, docsDrfDownstreamCapabPower, and docsDrfDownstreamCapabModulation for a channel, letting an engineer confirm the port supports the modulation profile planned for deployment. Cross-referencing docsDrfDownstreamTable's docsDrfDownstreamPhyDependencies shows which physical layer configuration a downstream channel depends on. A mismatch between the configured docsDrfDownstreamCapabJ83Annex and the actual plant standard (Annex A vs. B) would explain modem tuning or registration failures on that channel.

What Can Be Monitored

  • downstream channel frequency and bandwidth
  • downstream power level
  • modulation and interleaver settings
  • J.83 annex capability
  • concurrent services support
