Description: CableLabs MIB for DOCSIS Set-top Gateway tunnel, client, and classifier configuration on DOCSIS 2.0/3.0 cable networks

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DSG-IF-STD-MIB?

DSG-IF-STD-MIB is a CableLabs/DOCSIS standards MIB (vendor-neutral) defining managed objects for the DOCSIS Set-top Gateway (DSG) interface used to tunnel out-of-band messaging to cable set-top boxes over DOCSIS 2.0/3.0 cable plant. It exposes configuration and operational data for DSG tunnels, client identification, classification of downstream traffic into tunnels, and timeout/timer settings for the DSG channel sets (Tdsg1-Tdsg4). Its primary monitoring value is operational/configuration status rather than classic hardware faults: it lets an operator confirm the DSG mode a CMTS or cable modem is running in, verify DSG timer values, inspect the tunnel filter table that maps classifiers to DSG tunnels, and observe one-way recovery behavior when a device loses forward-path DSG signaling. It depends on the broader DOCSIS/CableLabs MIB family (e.g. DOCS-IF-MIB) and standard SNMP MIB-II conventions for the underlying interface table. It is deployed on CMTS headend equipment and DOCSIS cable modems/gateways, using the DSG-IF-STD-MIB reference in cable TV/broadband networks that carry set-top box control traffic in-band over DOCSIS.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DSG-IF-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (CableLabs/DOCSIS)
  • applies to CMTS headend equipment and DOCSIS cable modems/set-top gateways

Monitoring Examples

An operator would read dsgIfStdDsgMode to confirm which DSG operational mode a device is running, and check dsgIfStdTdsg1 through dsgIfStdTdsg4 (with their paired Timeouts objects) to verify the DSG timer configuration matches the CMTS. Walking dsgIfStdTunnelFilterTable/dsgIfStdTunnelFilterEntry shows how downstream classifiers map to specific DSG tunnels, letting an admin confirm set-top traffic is being routed to the correct tunnel. The dsgIfStdOneWayRecovery object indicates whether a device is operating in one-way (forward-path-only) recovery mode, which would reveal a return-path signaling problem, and dsgIfStdNotifications would alert on related state changes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DSG operational mode
  • DSG timer values (Tdsg1-Tdsg4)
  • tunnel-to-classifier mapping
  • one-way recovery status
  • DSG notification/trap events

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using dsgIfStdTdsg1Timeouts OID:

Select a CMTS/DOCSIS cable modem-gateway (Set-top Gateway tunnel, vendor-neutral CableLabs standard) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type dsgIfStdTdsg1Timeouts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of times Tdsg1 expired in the DSG eCM since last reboot. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
