Category: Domain: Network Management

Description: Manages network domain configuration and domain membership for grouping network devices by administrative domain.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DOMAIN-MIB?

DOMAIN-MIB manages network domain configuration and domain membership, allowing devices to be grouped by administrative domain, group, and subgroup for organizational or management purposes. It exposes a domain table containing objects such as domain name, client communication state, group/subgroup assignment, hardware type, and path name, effectively serving as a lightweight device/domain registry. Its monitoring relevance is limited but includes tracking a device's communication state (domComState) within its domain, which can serve as a basic reachability or software-status indicator, alongside static configuration data like domain and group assignment. No module description was available to confirm dependencies, and the MIB appears to be a fairly self-contained, older-style registry MIB. It is likely deployed in legacy network management systems that organize managed devices into administrative domains and groups for reporting and access-control purposes. Engineers can download the DOMAIN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOMAIN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG networked device (administrative domain registry) — Identified as Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG via enterprise OID 231 (token 'sni'), not a vendor-neutral MIB as previously described.

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll the domaintable/domName entries alongside domComState to confirm which domain a device belongs to and whether its communication state is currently healthy, and cross-reference domGroup/domSubGroup for organizational grouping along with domHw for hardware type. A device reporting an abnormal domComState value would indicate a communication problem with that domain member. The auxdomaintable appears to provide supplementary domain records, indexed similarly via domainIndex.

What Can Be Monitored

  • domain name assignment
  • domain communication state
  • group/subgroup membership
  • hardware type
  • domain path name
