What Is DMTF-SERVICE-LAYER-MIB?

DMTF-SERVICE-LAYER-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based translation MIB that maps the Desktop Management Interface (DMI) "Service Layer" MIF component group, defined by the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF), into SNMP per the DMTF DMI-to-SNMP Mapping Standard v1.0. It exposes objects describing manageable components' identity and lifecycle data, such as dmtfComponentIDTable entries for manufacturer, product, version, and serial number, plus installation/verification status and event-subscription tables. Its monitoring value is software/inventory status: it lets a management station confirm a component's manufacturer, product, version and serial number, verify installation status, and track DMI event-indication subscription state via dmtfSPIndicationSubscriptionState, rather than reporting hardware sensor telemetry like temperature or fan speed. It is explicitly a translation layer dependent on the DMTF DMI specification and DMI-to-SNMP mapping standard, requiring a DMI-to-SNMP mapping agent underneath it. It was typically deployed on desktop/server systems running a DMI service-layer instrumentation agent, common in enterprise PC and server management of that era. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the DMTF-SERVICE-LAYER-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DMTF-SERVICE-LAYER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • component manufacturer/product/version/serial number
  • component installation status
  • component verification status
  • DMI indication subscription state

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (DMTF DMI mapping), applicable to any desktop/server system running a DMI-to-SNMP mapping agent

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling dmtfComponentIDTable/dmtfComponentIDEntry would read manufacturer, product, version, and serialNumber for each DMI-instrumented component to build an asset inventory, and check the installation/verify objects to confirm a component installed and passed verification; dmtfSPIndicationSubscriptionTable/dmtfSPIndicationSubscriptionEntry with dmtfSPIndicationSubscriptionState would be checked to confirm whether the system is actively subscribed to receive DMI event indications.

dmtfServiceLayerMIF1.3.6.1.4.1.412.2.1This MIB is a translation of the DMTF Service Layer MIF defined by the Desktop Management Interface Specfiication, based on the translation rules defined by the DMTF DMI to SNMP Mapping Standard, Version 1.0. DMI-based systems running a DMI-to-SNMP Mapping Agent provide the ability to access DMI component instrumentation via SNMP protocol operations.
