Category: Hardware Inventory

Description: Manages the route control module (RCM) configuration and state on Cyan optical networking nodes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-RCM-MIB?

CYAN-RCM-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Cyan Inc. (an optical/packet-optical networking vendor later acquired by Ciena) for the Ring Closure Module (RCM), a hardware module used in ring-based optical network topologies on Cyan's platforms. It exposes per-module inventory and configuration data -- shelf and RCM identifiers, administrative state, asset tag, MAC address block, manufacturer CLEI code, description, and an auto-in-service soak timer -- indexed in cyanRcmTable. Its monitoring value is chiefly around hardware inventory and administrative/operational status of each RCM: confirming a module is administratively enabled, correctly identified by asset tag/serial/CLEI code, and tracking its soak-timer state during a bring-up sequence, which supports both fault detection (module state) and asset management (serial/CLEI/MAC tracking). It is part of Cyan's broader shelf/equipment management MIB family rather than an IETF standard. It would be deployed on Cyan Z-Series (or similar) packet-optical platforms used by carriers building resilient optical ring networks. Engineers can download the CYAN-RCM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-RCM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan (Ciena) packet-optical networking platform

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cyanRcmTable, indexed by cyanRcmShelfId and cyanRcmRcmId, to check cyanRcmAdminState for each Ring Closure Module and confirm it is enabled, while cyanRcmAutoinserviceSoakTimeSec shows whether a newly-inserted module is still in its soak/verification period before going fully in-service. cyanRcmAssetTag, cyanRcmMfgCleiCode, and cyanRcmBaseMacAddress support inventory audits, and cyanRcmDescription/cyanRcmIdentifier help positively identify the module in a multi-shelf deployment. An RCM stuck with an unexpected admin state would flag a ring-protection hardware problem needing attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RCM administrative state
  • auto-in-service soak timer status
  • module asset tag and serial/CLEI code
  • module base MAC address
  • module identification/description
